Title: OPH110 Advanced Ophthalmic Procedures PART I
Course Description:
This course is the introductory part I of a two part course which introduces the student to the terminology and theory of advanced diagnostic testing in the ophthalmic practice. Students will develop competency in the advanced clinical diagnostic techniques including tonometry, external testing for dry eye, slit lamp examination, confrontation and formal visual field testing, and external ocular photography.
Learning Outcomes:
As a result of taking this course the student will be able to:
Describe the testing sequence of basic clinical testing and advanced diagnostics.
Determine adequate candidates for diagnostic testing from interaction and from screening tests.
Describe the proper care and maintenance of ophthalmic equipment.
Explain infection control in the clinical setting. Techniques of instrument cleaning, hand washing and other measures of infection control are stressed.
Discuss and perform non-contact, indentation and applanation tonometry.
Apply and use the automated perimeter including patient selection, selection of tests and the visual field procedure.
Identify and explain the manual visual field instrumentation available.
Describe basic and intermediate testing of the ocular motility system.
Use the slit lamp to assess the anterior surface of the eye and estimate the anterior chamber and angle depth.
Explain the photography of external structures of the eye.
Demonstrate the area of interest for photography, align camera with area of interest, discuss appropriate lighting for optimum photographic results, and demonstrate consistency in background and illumination.
Assess the tear film using the slit lamp and Schirmer-type strips.
